Is it expensive to insure a Lexus?
Yes, a Lexus is generally fairly expensive to insure. We found a typical insurance price of $4,650 across all currently available models. That's about 10% more than the typical cost to insure a Mercedes-Benz. Lexus is owned by Toyota, but a Lexus costs about twice as much to insure as a Toyota-branded vehicle ($2,132 per year, on average).
Luxury cars generally have higher insurance costs than less expensive cars. One reason for this is because repair costs after a crash tend to be higher: the bumper of a $56,000 Lexus GX costs more than the bumper on a typical Kia.
Luxury cars can be likely targets for theft, as well. And higher-priced vehicles often have more powerful engines, which usually results in higher insurance rates.
However, high insurance costs for cars like Lexus vehicles are sometimes mitigated by safety features that haven't made it to less expensive models, such as sensors that detect turns in the road or oncoming traffic.
Lexus ES insurance rates
The typical price to insure a new Lexus ES is $3,388 per year, or $282 per month. That's 28% less than the average price across all Lexus models, and the second-cheapest Lexus to insure, behind only the NX SUV.
The best insurance rate we found for a Lexus ES sedan was at State Farm, where the typical price is $1,865 per year.
Lexus ES car insurance rates by year model
Model year | Annual insurance cost | Monthly insurance cost |
---|---|---|
2021 | $3,388 | $282 |
2020 | $3,443 | $287 |
2019 | $2,813 | $234 |
2018 | $3,693 | $308 |
Lexus GX insurance costs
The average cost to insure the Lexus GX SUV is $4,036 per year. That's $614 less than the average cost across all Lexus vehicles, and the second-cheapest Lexus SUV to insure, behind the entry-level NX.
We found that newer GX models are actually cheaper to insure than older models. A 2021 GX is 37% cheaper to insure than the 2018 model.

Model year | Annual insurance cost | Monthly insurance cost |
---|---|---|
2021 | $4,036 | $336 |
2020 | $4,496 | $375 |

2018 | $6,405 | $534 |
Lexus IS insurance prices
The average cost of insurance for a new Lexus IS is $3,617 per year. While that's 22% cheaper than the average across all Lexus models, it's not the cheapest Lexus sedan to insure — that's the slightly larger ES sedan.
Larger cars sometimes have lower insurance rates because they provide more protection to their occupants in the event of a crash.

Model year | Annual insurance cost | Monthly insurance cost |
---|---|---|
2021 | $3,617 | $301 |
2020 | $3,908 | $326 |

2018 | $4,528 | $377 |
Lexus LC insurance costs
At an average insurance rate of $6,999 per year, the Lexus LC coupe is among the most expensive Lexus models to insure. The sporty coupe is Lexus' fastest car, with a 0-60 time of just 4.4 seconds. It's also the most expensive Lexus to buy, with a starting MSRP of $94,125.
These factors, combined with the fact that the LC is a two-door coupe, make it very expensive to cover — even compared to other Lexus vehicles. Cars that are smaller, faster and more expensive generally have higher insurance rates because they are more likely to be involved in a crash and have a higher typical claim cost.
Lexus LC car insurance rates by year model
Model year | Annual insurance cost | Monthly insurance cost |
---|---|---|
2021 | $6,999 | $583 |
2020 | $5,766 | $480 |

Lexus LS insurance rates
The typical price of insurance for a Lexus LS sedan is $4,988 per year. The LS is Lexus' most expensive sedan to buy (MSRP $76,000), and it's the most expensive sedan to insure, too. On average, the cheaper IS and ES sedans cost about 46% less to buy and 30% less to insure.
However, the cost to insure an LS tends to drop for older models. A 2018 LS costs $1,003 less per year to insure than a new model.

Lexus LX insurance prices

Lexus NX insurance rates
At just $2,946 per year, the Lexus NX SUV is the cheapest Lexus model to insure. That's 37% less than the average rate we found across the entire brand, and $2,225 cheaper than the Lexus UX. While both are smaller SUVs with affordable sub-$40,000 MSRPs, The NX's larger size may help explain why its rates are so much lower.
The cost of insurance for a new Lexus RX is actually substantially cheaper than for older models. Insurance rates for a 2021 RX are nearly $4,000 less expensive than rates for a 2018 model.

The RC coupe is much less expensive to insure than Lexus' more powerful model, the LC. The RC has a much smaller price tag, at $43,545, along with a less powerful engine. Faster cars tend to have more expensive insurance because they're more likely to be involved in a serious accident.

However, older UX models tend to have much more affordable rates. A 2019 model (the first year the UX was available) has a typical insurance price of $3,627, and the 2020 model is under $3,000.

Methodology
To find the average cost of insurance for a Lexus, we gathered thousands of quotes for a sample driver living in Texas: a 30-year-old man with no recent accidents and average credit. Rates are based on a full-coverage policy with the following limits:
Coverage | Limits |
---|---|
Bodily injury liability | $50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident |
Property damage liability | $25,000 per accident |
Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury | $50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident |
Comprehensive and collision | $500 deductible |
Lexus stopped making the Lexus GS after the 2020 model year. As a result, we excluded it when calculating the average cost to insure a Lexus.
This analysis used insurance rate data from Quadrant Information Services. The quotes referenced were publicly sourced from insurer filings and should only be used for comparison purposes. Actual rates for your Lexus model may differ.
