Why it's great

Progressive is the best motorcycle insurance for riders in Ohio due to its great balance of affordability, complete coverage and service.

We believe that the best choice for motorcycle insurance for most people in Ohio is Progressive. Its complete coverage, affordable average price and positive reviews make it a standout among other providers in the state.

With Progressive's motorcycle insurance, you get replacement cost protection with a standard policy. If you experience a loss, replacement cost coverage reimburses you for the full amount without considering your property's depreciation. Providers will often charge extra for this coverage. Additionally, Progressive's motorcycle insurance includes coverage for original equipment manufacturer parts and $3,000 for replacing or repairing accessories and custom parts.

For this level of coverage, Progressive doesn't charge the cheapest rates in the state. However, its average price of $551 per year is still 11% less than Ohio's statewide mean. Progressive also offers a variety of easily achievable discounts, such as paying in full, switching from another provider and having a motorcycle license. These savings can further reduce the cost of your insurance policy.

The provider also has the best customer service of the companies we surveyed. Its complaint index of 0.47 from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) indicates that Progressive receives less than half the complaints than a typical insurer its size.

Why it's great

Geico is the most affordable motorcycle insurance for riders in Ohio due to its low prices and good service, with potential for future savings.

Geico has the cheapest motorcycle insurance in Ohio by a sizable amount. Its typical cost of coverage is $321 per year — 48% cheaper than the statewide average. Geico also has a fairly good customer service complaint index of 0.67, well below the number the NAIC uses to designate a regular insurer of the same size: 1.0.

You may be able to lower the cost of your motorcycle insurance even more by taking advantage of Geico's discounts. You could save money if you:

  • Insure multiple motorcycles
  • Have another policy with Geico
  • Meet an age threshold defined by your local representative
  • Complete a safety course
  • Renew your policy

While Geico's rates are impressive, it could be a good idea to consider another insurer if your bike has specialized needs. Despite Geico's impressive rates, it lacks the level of protection that we believe distinguishes the state's best insurer. Although you can purchase extra coverage for roadside assistance and accessories, you can't buy coverage for the total loss of your bike, original or custom parts replacement and you aren't able to upgrade with trip interruption for long journeys.

Best for motorcycle enthusiasts: Dairyland

Why it's great

Dairyland offers some of the most extensive coverage for motorcycles, making it a great option for motorcycle enthusiasts and collectors.

If you're someone who's looking for the most extensive coverage for your motorcycle, we recommend considering Dairyland's motorcycle insurance. Dairyland offers the ability to easily customize each of your policy's limits and protections. You may be eligible for replacement cost coverage if your bike is 3 years old or newer. You may also add:

  • Expanded parts coverage for optional equipment
  • Roadside assistance
  • Trip interruption coverage
  • Damage plus coverage for original equipment.

The average price of a Dairyland policy is $676 per year, which is 9% more expensive than Ohio's statewide average. Additionally, riders may be able to reduce their insurance costs by qualifying for Dairyland's discounts. If you're an enthusiast, you may save money by insuring multiple bikes with the company, being affiliated with any of the riding groups on the insurer's approved list or completing a safety course, among other discounts.

However, Dairyland does have the lowest rated customer service among the providers we surveyed. The insurer has a 2.69 complaint index, meaning it receives more than double the complaints from its customers as a similarly sized company.

What are Ohio's motorcycle insurance laws?

All motorcyclists in Ohio must have liability coverage. The state requires the same protection for automobile drivers, too. This protection covers costs if your driving results in bodily injury or property damage for someone else. All motorcycle drivers must also have an endorsement on their regular licenses or are required to carry separate motorcycle licenses.

Coverage type
Legal minimum in Ohio
Bodily injury$25,000 per person/$50,000 per accident
Death liability$25,000 per person/$50,000 per accident
Property damage$25,000

Ohio also requires some motorcycle drivers to wear helmets. Motorcyclists under 18 or who haven't been licensed for more than one year must wear helmets. Additionally, any passengers also have to wear helmets.

Methodology

We gathered over 250 quotes for addresses across Ohio. All properties were owned by a hypothetical married 45-year-old man who drove a 2021 Harley-Davidson FLHX Street Glide. Our quotes contained these coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury liability coverage: $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident
  • Property damage liability coverage: $50,000 per accident
  • Collision coverage: Included/$500 deductible
  • Comprehensive coverage: Included/$500 deductible
  • All other coverages: Not included

No variables affect the price of motorcycle insurance as much as the coverage you select, but the amount of time you've spent riding and your driving history can also play a role in determining your rates.
