How we chose the best motorcycle insurance in Nevada

To judge the best motorcycle insurance company in Nevada, we assessed each company's:

  • Affordability: The price typical shoppers might pay for motorcycle insurance in Nevada
  • Coverage options: How the coverage and endorsements offered by companies stack up against others
  • Customer service: Does an insurer regularly meet its policyholders' needs?

The best motorcycle insurance companies should be affordable enough that you can consider purchasing upgrades to your policy; however, a standard policy should provide enough protection without requiring you to purchase add-ons. The best motorcycle insurance companies should also have histories of answering claims fairly and quickly.

Affordability: Comparing motorcycle insurance prices in Nevada

The cost of motorcycle insurance can often be the determining factor for people shopping for coverage. With this in mind, we gathered rate information by requesting quotes from addresses across Nevada to calculate the average cost of motorcycle insurance in the state.

The rate you're quoted when shopping for motorcycle insurance depends on a couple of elements specific to your profile, such as the type of motorcycle you want to insure, the amount of coverage you want to purchase and your driving history.

We requested motorcycle insurance quotes for a 45-year-old married male homeowner with 20 years of riding experience. Our sample profile sought to insure a 2021 Harley-Davidson FLHX Street Glide. We purchased more coverage than the amount required by Nevada, purchasing insurance for the bike itself in addition to liability protection.

  • Bodily injury liability coverage: $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident
  • Property damage liability coverage: $50,000 per accident
  • Collision coverage: Included/$500 deductible
  • Comprehensive coverage: Included/$500 deductible
  • All other coverages: Not included

Coverage options: Evaluating motorcycle insurance policies and benefits

All of the insurers we've recommended offer more than enough coverage to comply with Nevada's legally required minimums, as well as additional endorsements you can purchase to customize your motorcycle insurance.

Before settling on a motorcycle insurance provider, you should evaluate whether an insurer's standard policy contains enough coverage for your bike while granting you the freedom to raise or lower coverage limits and purchase practical endorsements as your needs morph and grow.

We've constructed the following table to easily display the policy features available with the companies we've highlighted.

Customer service: Considering insurer quality in service and claims

We accounted for two elements when comparing the service quality of motorcycle insurance companies in Nevada: the complaint index computed by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) and AM Best's financial strength rating (FSR).

Insurer
NAIC complaint index
AM Best FSR
Geico0.67A++
Dairyland2.69A+
Nationwide0.53A+
Progressive0.82A+
USAA0.85A++

NAIC complaint index: The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) divides the number of complaints an insurer receives by its market share to arrive at its complaint index. The value 1.0 represents the number of complaints an insurer is expected to have, given its size. This means that the more a complaint index exceeds 1.0, the more complaints relative to its size it has received.

AM Best: AM Best gauges the ability of insurance providers to fulfill their financial obligations to their policyholders, especially if a natural disaster or economic recession were to occur. Most companies are ranked highly by AM Best, but this tool could help you distinguish which providers are more likely to present a financial risk.

How do you get a motorcycle license in Nevada?

You're required to get a motorcycle or Class M license to legally operate a bike in Nevada. You can get a stand-alone Class M license or add a motorcycle endorsement to your existing license. To receive a Class M license or endorsement, you must complete a skills course or pass a written test.

While adults have the choice between obtaining a learner's permit or a regular license, they must complete the state's skills test before being allowed to ride a motorcycle if they elect not to get a learner's permit. If you're under 18, you must comply with the same driving requirements as teenagers applying for a regular license.
