Why is insurance more expensive for sports cars?

Performance cars often have higher insurance rates because insurers consider them more likely than other vehicles to get in an accident that results in an insurance claim.

Additionally, sports cars are more expensive to repair. When setting rates, insurers consider how often car owners of a particular make and model file a claim. Since sports cars are capable of reaching high speeds and are more likely to be driven irresponsibly, they are more often involved in accidents. Because insurance costs are often so high for these vehicles, the best way you can get the cheapest insurance for your sports car is to compare cheap rates from multiple insurance companies.

Another reason fast cars are often associated with high insurance costs is that they are expensive to repair and replace — especially in the case of the European sports cars. Annual insurance costs for the cheapest performance cars, with values between $35,000 and $50,000, were 21% lower than they were for the most expensive vehicles — with values of more than $65,000 — that we surveyed.

Just because the Nissan is one of the cheapest sports cars we considered doesn't mean it's not fast.

Methodology

Vehicle specs — such as zero-to-60 time and vehicle cost — were gathered from CarSpecs.us. Our study included coupes and convertibles with model years between 2016 and 2020, zero-to-60 times of less than five seconds and prices of $75,500 or less. For vehicles with multiple model years and trims that met this criteria, the most recent car model was chosen.

Unless otherwise noted, insurance rates represent the cost of a full-coverage policy for a 40-year-old male driver with a clean record living in Indiana. We gave our driver the following coverage limits:

Coverage type
Study limits
Bodily injury liability$50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident
Personal injury protection$10,000
Property damage liability$25,000 per accident
Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury$50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident
Comprehensive and collision$500 deductible
